Our library began seriously collecting books on Greece in 1966, culminating in a total collection of over 2000 volumes, of which more than 90% are written in English, with the remainder written in Greek or other languages. Additional materials included in the library’s collection are magazines, periodicals, pamphlets, videos, cassette tapes, compact discs and a small number of artifacts.

Our collection contains a plethora of academic works, some rare and out-of-print, with most of them having being purchased by the Society. A large number of our acquisitions are gifts from Minas Savvas, PhD Emeritus, Professor of English Literature, San Diego State University. The remainder of our collection was derived from individual book gifts, with bequeathals from the estates of the following Hellenic Cultural Society members and friends:

Leonidas Agourides, PhD, Ryder College, New Jersey
Gail A. Burnett, PhD, Professor of Classics, San Diego State University
Peter Limber, Author and Hellenic History Scholar

The Hellenic Cultural Society collection covers a diverse history of Greece from ancient to modern times. The periods covered are the Ancient (Archaic, Homeric periods through the Classical Period) to the Ptolemaic Period to about 300 AD. It continues through the Byzantine Period (330 AD to 1453AD) down to the Modern, Ottoman/Revolutionary Period (1821) to the present.

We recently completed arrangements to place our entire collection with The Audrey Geisel Library of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) where it will be put to the best use, i.e., where future generations of scholars and students will have access to our collection for generations to come.
