A vital long-term goal of the Hellenic Cultural Society is the creation of a permanent facility in an adequate location to house itself. A headquarters to preserve and propagate the history and culture of over 40 centuries of Greek learning in a suitable cultural "home." GENESIS is the name of our program for accomplishing this goal and it functions under the chairmanship of 1st Vice President George S. Marinos.
At the moment, GENESIS is working with a project of the City of San Diego that controls the recently closed U.S. Naval Training Station facility. This city established Naval Training Center Project oversees all future development of the former military acreage; a sizeable portion of which is set aside for ethnic cultural use and will include twenty-two separate structures. It is slated to be ready for occupancy sometime in 2004, at which time leases must be negotiated. We have requested a minimum of 2500 square feet of space for our office-library, plus the use of an auditorium-assembly hall to seat from 150-200 people for our many programs, lectures, symposia and events.
